tamar Rabinovich, Israel's
ambassador to the United
States, made a special trip to
Detroit on Monday for a
speech to some of the area's ma-
jor givers to the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
The Jerusalem native — who
has served as head of the Israeli
delegation for talks with Syria
— spoke on the peace process,
American-Israeli relations and
Israel's domestic agenda.
Maintaining that local Jews
will feel benefits of peace over-
seas, the ambassador said U.S.
citizens can catalyze the process
by initiating good relations at
home.
"Once bridges are built (be-
tween Jews and Arabs) here it
will send a very powerful mes-
sage to the Middle East," Mr.
Rabinovich said. "Normally we
have found that what came
from here to the Arabs in the
Middle East was a radical mes-
sage. For instance, when emis-
saries came from this country
to support the activities of
Hamas...it had an impact in the
wrong direction."
In a press conference before
the speech, the ambassador
called for ongoing financial
support from the American
Jewish community. Israeli lead-
ers are predicting an influx of
Russians who want to escape
the unrest in their homeland.
With possibilities for lasting
peace on the horizon, Israel is
an appealing destination, he
said.
In addition to increased ab-
sorption expenses, the country
will face costs associated with
building infrastructure — for
example, fences and roads be-
tween Israel and the proposed
regions of Arab self-rule.
"If anything, the need has
been increased, not reduced,"
he said.
But the ambassador said Is-
rael is not just looking for fi-
nancial aid.
"The State of Israel is under-
taking risks as it moves forward
in the peace process and it re-
lies on continuing support from
(Diaspora) Jews," he said."For-
eign policy making in the Unit-
ed States is a process that
involves Congress and the pub-
lic at large. American Jews have
their input into this process and
very positively so."

Mr. Rabinovich visited
Detroit this week because it
"is one of the better known Jew-
ish communities back home ...
"To some extent it's because
of the traditional position of
Max Fisher, who is very well
known and respected in Israel.
But it is a relationship that pre-
cedes Israel's statehood," he
said. "Some of our leaders like
Golda Meir came here. Over the
years, many many bridges have
been built."
