for Jews, and we have the abil-
ity to get involved in the
process. If we don't take these
opportunities, it is our loss."
Mr. Naftaly and other Jew-
ish Democrats have helped sev-
eral "friends of Israel" raise
money for the Senate and
House. Among them: Sens. Carl
Levin and Donald Riegie, and
Michigan Reps. Bob Carr,
Sander Levin, Dennis Hertel,
John Dingell, William Ford and
Dale Kildee.
But, in what he cnlls the best
interest of the Jewish commu-
nity, Mr. Naftaly has gone out
of his way to develop relation-
ships with some legislators oth-
ers have written off as enemies
of Israel. Number one on this
list is the House majority whip,

David Bonior, who sympathizes
with the Palestinian cause and
has been viewed by AIPAC as
hostile toward Israel.
"We have access to his office,"
Mr. Naftaly says. "He may be
on the wrong side sometimes,
but it is still better to have ac-
cess. There is too much hatred
for the other team in politics."
Mr. Naftaly doesn't boast
much about his own accom-
plishments, but he is especial-
ly proud about one career fete:
As budget director, he helped
Mr. Blanchard balance the
state budget in the days when
Wall Street wizards had given
the state low bond ratings.
"We paid the state's debts,"
he says, adding quietly, "That
was nice." ❑

World Jewish Leaders
Meet With The PLO

London (JTA) - The first-
ever public meeting between
the lay leader of the Anglo-
Jewish community and the
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization representative to the
United Kingdom took place
in London this week, with
both men giving a ringing
endorsement of the self-rule
accord recently signed in
Washington by Israel and
the PLO.
In an echo of the historic
moment between Israel',
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin and PLO leader

Yassir Arafat at the White
House on Sept. 13, the presi-
dent of the Jewish Board of
Deputies here, Judge Israel
Finestein, and PLO diplo-
mat Afif Safieh sealed their
meeting with a handshake.
Their meeting, under the
auspices of a multi-faith
group, was one of several
first-ever encounters bet-
ween Jewish leaders and
PLO officials that have been
held in various countries
since relations between
Israel and the PLO began to
thaw.
