the Lutheran church has coura-
geously decided to face up to
this," he said. "What do we say
to survivors of the Holocaust?
That's difficult. But as a pastor,
I have learned that people will
go through almost anything if
they can grow from it.
"We as Christians have to say
that to survivors. If we don't
learn from our mistakes, then
we are saying that what they
have gone through is of no val-
ue. Their suffering, which will
never be justified, might at least
be about a situation where their
grandchildren and great-grand-
children might not have to suf-
fer."
The Rev. Lyons said that for
some Lutherans it might be dif-
ficult to reject the anti-Semitic
doctrine because for them, what
Martin Luther said was practi-
cally canon. They were raised

doctrine of their leader. This
doesn't make them necessari-
ly anti-Semitic, according to the
Rev. Lyons.
What was written 450 years
ago was tragically blown out of
proportion just 50 years ago. It's
difficult to reject what's been
passed down, what's been
taught. It's admirable and
courageous that the Lutheran
Church now speaks out.
Hopefully the change will be
felt by all of us. It's difficult to
forget what was said while two
children played together. No
one can question the impact of
religious doctrine and of a fam-
ily's intense belief system. If our
religious leaders can publicly
take a stand of mutual respect
and dialogue, then maybe two
kids playing in a box can also.

At the time of the Civil War,
most Jews sided with the
abolitionists. When Rabbi
Morris Raphall preached a
sermon early in 1861, at-
tempting to justify slavery
on biblical grounds, he was
bitterly assailed in Jewish
circles.
