"Fixing some ice," she
said. I just stood there
looking at her. She car-
ried the bowl back to the
dining room and when
she returned I said, "You
ought to stop it."
"Excuse me?"
"I said you ought to
stop it." She stared at me
and I said, "I understand
what you're trying to do,
Beth, but I think it's
wrong."
She continued to stare
at me. "I don't know what
you're talking about."
"Yes, you do," I told her.
There was a long interval
of silence; finally I said,
"Surely you must know
it's wrong to leave Phil's
pipe and his slippers next
to his chair, and fill up a
bowl with ice cubes that
aren't going to be used." I
paused. "To say nothing
of leaving Phil's golf clubs
in the front closet and his
pajamas hanging on the
bathroom door."
"I don't understand
what you're talking
about," she said with an
edge of anger in her voice.
"And I wish you'd leave."
I sat down at the table.
"I have no intention of
leaving," I said. "Not until
I give you some advice."
She stared at me and I
said, "After Fred died I
felt just the way you do
but I finally realized one
thing. It is better by far to
forget and be happy than
to remember and be sad,
and I'm going to sit right
here until you can explain
to me why you refuse to
go back to Springfield
with your children
instead of staying here in
this house and ruining
their lives as well as your
own."
I watched her fold her
arms and take a deep
breath and then I listened
as she told me that the
pajamas weren't Phil's.
They belonged to Walter.
Walter?
Walter. Who had come
to live with her and the
children almost six
months ago. She told me
the golf clubs were
Walter's, as were the
shaving brush and the
razor, and went on to say
that Walter was a widow-
er and sold insurance and
would be home in about
20 minutes, at which time

he would pour the soft
drink into the ice-filled
glass and walk into the
living room and seat
himself in the green chair
and take off his shoes and
put on his slippers.
Then he would light his
pipe and listen as she and
the children told him
what had happened to
them that day, after
which he would tell them
all the things that had
happened to him. And if I
wished, I was certainly
welcome to stay and lis-
ten.
I thanked her for offer-
ing me a chance to meet
Walter but said I had bet-
ter go because it was a lot
later than I had realized.
Then I left. ❑
