he would stick with drama.
"I never thought I was going
to sing or dance," he said. His
latest movie, The Music of
Chance, is an elliptical, myste-
rious exploration of power and
gambling. "I started studying
singing in my 20s. For dancing,
I put myself in the hands of a
great choreographer or two.
"When I jump into any cre-
ative project, I usually end up
knowing something I didn't
know before, and that excites
me. I approach everything from
an acting standpoint, and I
have different muscles that go
into their own work for the truth
of the moment."
Although he enjoys his career
so much that he considers it a
hobby as well, Mr. Grey likes to
spend some free hours savoring
another passion — food.
He relishes inviting close
friends for gourmet dishes he
cooks, going out to dinner and
furthering the Meals on Wheels
program for New York's home-
bound elderly.
Cooking is an additional tal-
ent he has passed along to the
next generation in his family.
His son, Jimmy, is a chef in
northern California.
Counting himself as a strong
enthusiast on behalf of Israel,
where he has visited but not en-
tertained, Mr. Grey happily an-
ticipates the Balfour Concert.
He also hopes to use the visit
to Michigan as an opportunity
to catch up with a longtime
friend, Barbara Whiting Smith
of Bloomfield Hills, the daugh-
ter of composer Richard Whit-
ing and the sister of singer
Margaret Whiting.
"I look forward to going to De-
troit every time it's on my sched-
ule," he said. "I'm always excited
to go back to a city that I know,
where there are people that I
know and where I have a kind
of history."
Joel Grey's performance for
the Balfour Concert is 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 1, at the Fox. For ticket in-
formation, call the Zionist Or-
ganization, 569-1515.0

Group Show
The Photography Group of the
Institute for Retired Profes-
sionals (IRP) will present its
second annual "Group Show" in
the Maple-Drake Jewish Corn-
munity Center lobby Oct. 18-25.
The public is invited to meet the
artists at a reception in their
honor from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 19.
Refreshments will be served.
The exhibit displays shots
that record excursions made by
members on "group shoots."
Members of the Photography
Group include prize-winning
artists as well as camera buffs.
Call the IRP office, 967-4030,
for information.
