You'd pay a lot
more for a psychiatrist
and he wouldn't feed
you as well.
The rooms have been
crafted by a theatrical set
designer, which explains
their dramatic, plush ap-
peal.
There is nothing too slight
to be taken care of by the
staff at the Inn at Little
Washington; God is in the
details, and, at this inn, the
superb support staff is well
in control. They prepare a
tray of mint iced tea and
cakes and cookies, which are
served almost immediately
upon a guest's arrival.
The inn is under the
stewardship of chef Patrick
O'Connell and Reinhardt
Lynch, who opened for busi-
ness in 1978. The story goes
that they added the inn's
rooms to accommodate the
overflow crowds for dinner; I
think they just needed the
space to hold the many pla-
ques and honors won over
the years.
And they have been boun-
tiful. The inn is the first of
its kind to be accorded five
stars in the Mobil Travel
Guide. It also captured five
diamonds in the tour guides
published by the American
Automobile Association of
America and has been rated
best of the best by the ven-
erated Zagat Guide.
The Inn at Little Washing-
ton also is a member of the
highly selective Relais &
Chateaux, an international
chain of deluxe properties
and restaurants with links
of 14 K gold.
This year, the inn's dining
spot was named "Restaurant
of the Year" by the James
Beard Foundation, an honor
not lost on the up to 3,000
diners clamorina for a claim
to the inn's 75 b seats each
Saturday night.
Try anything on the menu
—warmabe chefs from other
points of the country visit
here to apprentice under
Chef O'Connell — but make
sure to save room for the
white chocolate mousse in
bed between dark silky
sheets, "a tasty treat that is
both a work of art and a
palate pleaser." It is the
perfect dessert to send you
off into slumber.
If you want to take the
time to explore the surroun-
ding area, the little town is
no hole-in-the-wall, although
Luray Caverns is one of the
country's most prominent
holes-in- the-ground.
About 20 miles away from
the inn, Luray Caverns
offers one-hour guided tours
of all the stalactites and
stalagmites.
The town of Washington,
which was surveyed by its
namesake in 1749, is a
charming. ❑
