WHEN 'TERROR
STRIKES
the boast, "My father is bet-
ter than your father!" Every
individual is equally signifi-
cant before God because we
are all equally the descen-
dants of the same original
parents.
This concept, then, is what
Ben Azai taught when he
said, "This is the book of the
generations of man," simply
man — unqualified, unla-
beled and universal — the
human being as the culmi-
nation of God's miracle of cre-
ation. That, said Ben Azai, is
the great principle of the
Torah, for it clearly proclaims
the unity and equality of all
people of all races, all creeds
and all national origins.
Therefore, "Love thy neigh-
bor as thyself."
The great tragedy of man
was his failure, from the be-
ginning, to accept this prin-
ciple. Man reversed God's
process. He failed to divide
between that which God had
intended to be divided, and
he introduced divisiveness
where it was contrary to
God's purpose. In spite of the
tasting of the fruit of the tree
of knowledge of good and evil,
man failed to divide and dis-
tinguish between them.
The tragedy has continued
down through the ages. Hu-
mankind has bred divisive-
ness and propagated disunity
in defiance of God's will. God
gave man the capacity to dis-
tinguish between light and
darkness, between good and
evil, between right and
wrong. In so doing, he be-
comes privileged to serve as
God's partner in the work of
creation and, thereby, to re-
store that unity with which
the world began. ❑
