Christians Join
Sukkot March

Jerusalem (JTA) — Security
was tightened and streets
were clogged with traffic as
tens of thousands gathered
here for the annual holiday
celebration of Sukkot, the
weeklong festival com-
memorating the wandering
in the wilderness after the
Exodus from Egypt.
About 25,000 people, in-
cluding 4,000 Christians,
marched through the center
of the city in brightly colored
clothes, waving flags and
singing songs.
The Christian contingent
was here from more than 70
countries for the Interna-
tional Christian Embassy's
Feast of Tabernacles
celebration.
Thousands of observant
Jews converged on the
Western Wall for a massive
blessing of the kohanim, or
priests.
Security there was excep-
tionally tight, in part to pre-
vent members of the Temple
Mount Faithful, a Jewish
extremist group that wants
to rebuild the Temple, from
gaining access to the mount.
It was feared that they
would incite friction with
Muslims at the site, which
also houses the Dome of the
Rock.
The city center's
sidewalks, shops and cafes
were also filled as many
Israelis enjoyed a week-long
vacation from work. 0

PLO Official
Visits Israel

Jerusalem (JTA) — A high-
level Palestine Liberation
Organization official is
scheduled to participate in
the second annual
Jerusalem Business Con-
ference.
Ahmed Ali Suleiman
Karia, 56, known as Abu
Alaa, is the head of the econ-
omic division of the PLO's Al
Fatah faction. He was the
PLO official who headed the
secret negotiations with
Israel in Norway that
resulted in the historic ac-
cord on self-rule.
His upcoming visit to
Israel was approved by
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin. But he will travel
here in a private capacity, as
the guest of the economic
conference, which is spon-
sored by the economic daily
Globus. 0
