On Oct. 13, local physi-
cians will participate in a
panel discussion about
prostate cancer. It will be
held at the Maple-Drake
Jewish Community Center at
7:30 p.m.
Last year, 36,000 Ameri-
can men died of the disease.
It is the second-leading cause
of cancer death in men.
There is no known cause of
prostate cancer said Sinai
Hospital urologist Michael
Lutz, but "the earlier the di-
agnosis, the better the out-
come."
"It very much parallels
breast cancer," he said.
Dr. Lutz, who also serves
on the Providence Hospital
staff, organized Sinai's first
prostate cancer screening
program, held in late Sep-
tember. The two-day pro-
gram, sponsored by Sinai and
Providence, screened more
than 200 men. Some 15 per-
cent showed abnormalities in
their blood tests and rectal
exams.
Because these abnormali-
ties could be an indication of
malignancy, the men will be
referred for further studies,
Dr. Lutz said.
The challenge is getting
men to open their eyes to the
risk.
"In addressing various
groups for the Cancer Soci-
ety, the biggest problem I en-
counter is getting men to go
in to get the examination,"
said Mr. Schwartz, who is

active with a speakers'
bureau. "When Dr. Lutz told
me, 'You have cancer,' a zil-
lion questions went through
my mind. 'Is it curable? Is it
treatable?' "
Even men who are espe-
cially leery about blood tests
and rectal exams should not
avoid screenings. Said Dr.
Lutz, "To put your head in
the sand is crazy. It's better
to catch it before it's too late."
Sheldon Schwartz, who is
recovering, says that treat-
ment for prostate cancer ex-
tends beyond surgery. He
stresses the importance of
support groups like Us Too,
headed by Dr. Lutz, Man-
Two-Man at Providence Hos-
pital and others throughout
metropolitan Detroit.
"There is help out there,"
Mr. Schwartz said. "But first
the man has to take the ini-
tiative and get screened." CI
