Davidson directions in Jewish education or programs to address the needs of the elderly, Conrad Giles has provided leadership and insight into the issues that concern our Jewish community. For his involvement and commitment to the Jewish People, Dr. Giles has been selected as this year's recipient of the coveted Butzel Award, named for a man who personified compassion and service to the under- privileged of Detroit. The former president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit has filled many roles and responsibilities on the national and state scene, as well as in his home community. He is a vice- president of the Council of Jewish Federations and a vice chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. His leadership of the Michigan Jewish Conference has enabled that body to bring outstate Jewish communi- ties together to explore and promote common interests. As chairman of the Jewish Education Planning Committee, Dr. Giles led in the development of a blueprint for delivering educa- tion to the youth of our community. He also played key roles in the development of the Task Force on Services to the Non-Institutional- ized Elderly, the Jewish Population Study and the Task Force on Services for Persons with Disabilities. An ophthalmologist specializing in the treatment of children, Dr. Giles was instrumental in the creation of the Michigan-Israel Cornea Connection, a program in which Michigan donors supply corneas for transplant in Israel. Among his other affiliations are Jewish Family Service, Fresh Air Society, United Jewish Foundation, Sinai Hospital and Detroit Men's ORT. Dr. Giles co-chaired the Michigan Miracle Mission to Israel and has worked actively on behalf of the Allied Jewish Campaign.
