CALL 788-0921 D BE PART OF SPORTS HISTORY weren't going to get hurt. Hey, the pros wanted to have a good time, too." After attracting 22 campers the first year, the camp has been a sellout for two consecutive years. There were 30 campers in 1992. Of this year's 32 campers, three were returnees from 1992 and one from 1991. Campers came from across the Detroit area and places such as California, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Penn- sylvania, Texas, West Vir- ginia and Wisconsin. A former Windsor resident who now works for the BBC in London made the longest trip to attend the camp. The president of Detroit Red Wings Fantasy Camp Inc. is Wings assistant coach Dave Lewis, the camp founder. In addition to his off- ice camp duties, Lewis is in charge of all the on-ice conch- tioning and instruction. Bleiwas, who has never played hockey, says he wasn't even that big a fan of the game until he met Lewis through a mutual friend a few years ago. Soon, they started discussing Lewis' idea of a fantasy camp and a busi- ness partnership was formed. This was the first year the camp was held at Fraser. It was staged at the Universi- ty of Michigan-Dearborn are- na the first two years. Improved security, more seating capacity, and better facilities for television taping of the benefit game were listed by Bleiwas as the ma- jor reasons for the move. "Fraser is like a mini-Joe Louis Arena," Bleiwas said. Believe it or not, planning will begin next month for the 1994 camp. "Even though we've gotten much more efficient, there are so many details to take care of, and Dave and I have such crazy lifestyles," Bleiwas explained. ❑ FREE Hosts Sukkot Event A Chassidic style Sukkot cele- bration will be hosted by FREE and Bais Chabad of North Oak Park 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Jim- my Prentis Morris Jewish Com- munity Center.
