Jackier Named HMC Dinner Chair Lawrence Jackier Lawrence S. Jackier has been named patron chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Center's ninth anniversary dinner to be held Oct. 24 at the Westin Hotel in Detroit's Renaissance Center. He served as chairman of the HMC's eighth anniversary din- ner last year. This year, he was a co-chairman of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Miracle Mission, which sponsored the journey of 1,300 area residents to Israel. Mr. Jackier is an attorney and partner in the law firm of Silver, Gould, Eizelman, Zoller, Upfal, Bean, and Jackier in Bloomfield Hills. Mr. Jackier also serves as president and trustee of the Theodore and Mina Bargman Foundation; secretary, trea- surer, and trustee of the Louis Blumberg Foundation; and president, treasurer, and trustee of the Stanley Imerman Memorial Foundation. The evening also marked the inauguration of the Milton and Lois Shiffman Program for Clinical and Basic research Collaboration be- tween the National Institutes of Health and Bar-Ilan University. David Hermelin, shown with the Shiffmans, presented the award on behalf of the University and discussed the appropriateness of the their work to ad- vance scientific research in the State of Israel through Bar-Han University. Keshet Hosts Workshops "The family Circle: You are the Experts," a program for family members of people with special needs, will be held 9:00 a.m.- noon Oct. 17 at the United Hebrew schools Building in Southfield. The program will include presentations on topics relat- ing to people with disabilities. Sibling workshops will be of- fered, in addition to supervised care for children and young adults, including those with special needs. The panel will consist of par- ents and professionals who have developed creative solu- tions for people with disabili- ties. JPM Hosts Kosher Food Fair The world's largest matzah ball will be unveiled at the 1993 Michigan Kosher Food Fair Oct. 31 at the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish Community Center. Sponsored by the Neigh- borhood Project of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, the afternoon will fea- ture kosher food vendors ex- hibiting their traditional and not-so-traditional Jewish fare and a discussion of "Heart- Smart Kosher" by a Sinai Hospital nutritionist. Distributors, retailers and caterers of kosher food products will display their wares at the gathering. Manufacturers prod- ucts on display include Manischewitz, Rokeach, Streits, Kedem and Mothers. Information will be available about how to keep kosher. Activities for children will in- clude a moonwalk, games in the gym and a folk music pre- sentation. SZ 'Tapestry' Features Jewish Life The third annual "Tapestry: Weaving the Fabric of Jewish Life" will be held 8 p.m. Oct. 23 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. The evening will begin with a Havdalah service, followed by two hours of workshops and discussion groups. Dessert and entertainment will top off the event. Those attending will be able to choose from a selection of top- ics and speakers. The first ses- sion will include David Hermelin speaking on how to balance family, community ser- vice and career. Rabbi William Gershon of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, and Professor Sylvia Hacker, associate pro- fessor of community health nursing at the University of Michigan, will speak on sexual ethics and how to enliven mar- riage and other relationships. Harlene Winnick Appelman, director of field services, Whizin Institute for the Jewish Family, and educational specialist, the Agency of Jewish Education, will talk about Jewish family myths and expectations for families.
