ny day now, the Michi-
gan Department of Pub-
lic Health will receive
word from the Health
Care Financing Administra-
tion in Chicago to send anoth-
er state inspection crew to
Borman Hall, the 212-bed
nursing home that failed its
most recent state inspection
last July.
Though the facility was cit-
ed for four serious code viola-
tions, Borman Hall
administrators are optimistic
about the upcoming reinspec-
tion.
"I'm feeling that we've done
as well as we could have ex-
pected," said Director John
Steele. "We've addressed every
issue that was cited as defi-
cient in the survey. We're
ready for another survey. I'm
confident we'll pass."
Mr. Steele said the Home
has held 62 in-services, during
which staff members were
trained in residents' rights,
better assessment techniques
and other areas of nursing
care. Administrators and nurs-
es have developed a restora-
tive care program to
rehabilitate residents who
have suffered from strokes and
other debilitating illnesses.
Recently, Denise Bortolani-
Rabidoux, executive director
for the Jewish Home for Aged,
met with the Michigan De-
partment of Public Health's
Delphine Shott to discuss
progress at the Home.
"They sound very positive,
(but) I don't know if they will
pass their next inspection. I
hope so. Their enthusiasm is
great," Ms. Shott said.
Dr. Richard Yerian, chief
medical consultant for the Bu-
reau of Health Systems in
Lansing, says reports from
Elmer Bensen, who was ap-
pointed by the JHA board to
act as monitor and liaison to
the MDPH, have been simi-
larly upbeat. ❑
