"I haven't had this much fun in years! I've met new friends. I'm involved
in activities. I'm happy — and so is my family. Before, housekeeping was a
chore, cooking for myself wasn't fun and I didn't feel secure living alone.
Now, my family has peace of mind... and I'm having the time of my life!"

Vivace Series
Opens At Temple

Vivace will open its 17th season
8:30 p.m. Oct. 19 with a concert
by Claudia Schmidt at the
Birmingham Temple.
Many of Ms. Schmidt's num-
bers are performed a cappella.
She plays the 12-string guitar,
the mountain dulcimer and the
deluxe pianolin. This instru-
ment, invented in Michigan in
the 1940s, is a rectangular
wooden box with 52 strings that
is plucked or strummed with
the left hand, bowed with the
right.
Ms. Schmidt infuses her con-
certs with anecdotes, historical
stories, wisecracks and poetry,
much of it original.
For ticket information, call
Joyce Cheresh, 647-4632; or
Ilene Cohen, 288-3953. The
Birmingham Temple's Dinner
Club will host a meal before the
concert. Call Pera Kane, 357-
7746, for details and reserva-
tions.

Luis de Torres, Columbus'

America, was a Marrano —
one of thousands of Spanish
Jews forced to live as Chris-

gave the turkey its name,
calling it "tuki", the Hebrew
word for "peacock" or
"parrot".
