R-Va., said he was "deeply touched by your continuing and everlasting reverence for a father who allegedly made a mistake, but the son still stands by with affection for his father." The Wiesenthal Center researched the elder Shalikashvili's past in re- sponse to a request from the publication Defense Daily, which first reported the rev- elations in August, after Mr. Clinton armounced the nom- ination. Once the revelations broke, some in the Jewish community expressed con- cern that Mr. Clinton had romanticized the Shalikashvili family's past when he announced the nomination Aug. 11. At the time, the president spoke of how, at the age of 16, Gen. Shalikashvili mov- ed to the United States with his family and subsequently climbed his way to the top of the American military hier- archy. He also recounted how, when the general was 8 years old, his family had "fl- ed in a cattle car westward to Germany in front of the advance." But Jewish officials noted that only victims of Nazism, not those tied to the Nazis, fled in cattle cars. Some officials also raised questions about how the Shalikashvili family entered the United States in 1952, considering the father's military history. Canada Pays Legal Costs Toronto (JTA) — Canada's Supreme Court has ordered the government to pay thousands of dollars in legal costs to a man it prosecuted for Nazi war crimes before dropping the case against him. The Sept. 23 ruling upheld a March 1992 decision by a lower court ordering the government to pay $151,000 (Canadian) in legal costs in- curred by Michael Pawlowski. Mr. Pawlowski, 75, a retired carpenter from Ren- frew, Ontario, was charged Dec. 15, 1989, with eight counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the 1942 deaths of 410 Jews and 80 Poles in the Minsk region of Nazi-occupied White Russia (today Belarus), where he allegedly served as a local policeman. ❑ Attention...all high school tennis players!
