itcher), have approved giving up
the land in return for peace.
There is no single authorita-
tive "halachic" position on this
question, just as there is none
on many other issues, especial-
ly those where rabbinic exper-
tise may not be as relevant as
military or political knowledge
and experience.
The same Code of Jewish
Law which Rabbi Silberberg
quotes unequivocally Plso states
that saving lives (pikuach
nefesh) supercedes many com-
mandments, including observ-
ance of Shabbat.
For those who believe that
the present and future agree-
ments will save lives — again,
reasonable people can differ on
this, unless they surrender their
judgment to unquestioning be-
lief in a leader — "giving au-
tonomy" to the Palestinians may
not "go against Halachah," in
Rabbi Silverberg's ex cathedra
pronouncement, but may even
be commanded by it.

Does the Rabin-Arafat hand-
shake signify the dawn of a new
era of peace between Israel and
the Arabs in the Middle East?
Zionists and fi-iends of Israel fer-
vently hope so, although the
mood in Israel and within the
Jewish community is one of anx-
iety and disbelief.
To be sure, the media-event
in Washington marked only the
beginning of a long and arduous
process that may be bogged
down and unravel along the
way, especially in view of the
many ambiguities embodied in
the initial agreement of princi-
ples.
Yet, those who have cease-
lessly droned on the "Peace
Now" theme, whitewashing the
PLO and libeling Israel as a
racist usurper and ruthless "col-
onizer," are now coming forward
to claim the fruits of their "vic-
tory" while sanctimoniously
telling the Jewish community,
"we told you so."
Henry Kissinger argued —
convincingly and correctly —
that the recent Washington cer-
emony was made possible !--.y
"exhaustion": material exhaus-

tion on the part of the PLO; psy-
chological exhaustion on the
part of Israel. It was not the re-
sult of an ideological shift
toward the Peace Now advo-
cates in the Israeli cabinet, nor
was it due to the moralistic
preachings by their counter-
parts in America.
Surely, those who now claim
credit for the Arab-Israeli "rec-
onciliation" cannot be accused
of contributing to the "material
exhaustion" of the PLO; if any-
thing, they tried to give the PLO
a gloss of political and moral re-
sponsibility.
Perhaps Peace Now can
claim credit for contributing to
Israel's "psychologic 1 exhaus-
tion," but that's a su )ject best
left for future historians to pon-
der.

A Footnote On
Family To Family

Thank you for the fine article
(Sept. 17) on the challenge of re-
settlement from the former So-
viet Union. One small but
important point: The Women's
Division of the Jewish Federa-
tion initiated the Family to
Family program together with
the National Council of Jewish
Women, Greater Detroit Sec-
tion.

Vandals Deface
Milan Center

Rome (JTA) — Vandals
scrawled swastikas and an
anti-Semitic slogan last
week on the wall next to the
Jewish center in Milan.
The racist graffiti, sprayed
in red paint., was discovered
on the morning of Sept. 23.
Three swastikas, the
slogan "Jews to the pyre,"
and a Celtic cross — a sym-
bol used by right-wing ex-
tremists — were sprayed.
