Many of Ms. Schmidt's num- bers are performed a cappella. She plays the 12-string guitar, the mountain dulcimer and the deluxe pianolin. This instru- ment, invented in Michigan in the 1940s, is a rectangular wooden box with 52 strings that is plucked or strummed with the left hand, bowed with the right.
