Henry Kissinger:
Heads prize committee.

LOI0-BOSS

UNESCO
Awards Prize

Paris (JTA) — Israeli Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin and
Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres, along with Palestine
Liberation Organization
leader Yassir Arafat, have
won UNESCO's Felix
Houphouet-Boigny Peace
Prize.
The decision was announc-
ed in Paris by former U.S.
Secretary of State Henry
Kissinger, president of the
prize committee's jury.
The Felix Houphouet-
Boigny Peace Prize was cre-
ated in 1989 by the United
Nations Educational, Scien-
tific and Cultural Organiza-
tion.
It is awarded in recogni-
tion of actions by in-
dividuals, institutions or
associations who have con-
tributed in a significant
manner to the promotion,
safeguarding or maintenance
of peace in the world, as well as
to the defense of human rights
and freedoms.
The prize, which includes a
check for $145,000, bears the
name of the president of the
Ivory Coast.
Mr. Kissinger said the jury
agreed that the most spec-
tacular and important event
this year has been the
agreement signed last week
in Washington between
Israel and the PLO.
The jury consequently
awarded the prize to leading
members of the two parties
who made the historic
agreement possible, said Mr.
Kissinger.
In 1991, the prize was
awarded to South African
President F.W. De Klerk
and African National Con-
gress President Nelson
Mandela. Last year's winner
was the Hague Academy of
International Law. ❑
