were melted down to make

bell rests on a piece of
Jerusalem stone, a gift from

Soon we were heading
upstairs to the third floor,
where we entered the large,
imposing chamber of the
Security Council and took
seats in the public gallery.
Down below was the horse-
shoe-shaped table where the
five permanent members sit
— the U.S., United Kingdom,
China, France and the Rus-
sian Federation (the former
USSR) — and next to them,
the four non-permanent
members.
Meetings here are con-
ducted in six languages:
Arabic, Chinese, English,
French, Russian and Spanish.
"The Security Council
works to maintain interna-
tional peace and security,"
said Ms. Hanson. It is in this
council that peacekeeping
forces are set up or cease-fire
resolutions established and
other decisions affecting
world peace are made.

stopped briefly to look at an
exhibit about the Secretary
General, the chief adminis-
trative officer of the United
Nations. Next to a photo of
the current Secretary
General, General Boutros
Boutros-Ghali of Egypt, were
photos of former
Secretaries-General.
We also looked at a display
on another wall, this one of
the U.N. peacekeeping forces,
which were awarded a Nobel
Prize for Peace. The display
included a large map showing
the different places around
the world where these forces
are stationed, including an
observer mission in Jerusa-
lem since 1974 and another
in the Golan Heights.
Next we were ready to look
at a few of the gifts to the
United Nations given by
member countries.
The large mosaic hanging
on one wall is a gift of the
United States. A representa-
tion of Norman Rockwell's
painting The Golden Rule, it
shows vivid close-ups of faces
reflecting ethnic and re-
