H
e did a smart thing
. . . If David Syme
hadn't walked down
the aisle and straight
out the door immediately fol-
lowing his recent concert at
Steve Milgrom's Magic Bag
Theatre on Woodward, heav-
en only knows when the jam-
packed audience would have
let him off the stage! . . . They
might have had the humble
and gracious David up there
all night!
It was a brilliant perfor-
mance by David Syme, who
has become one of the pre-
mier piano stylists in this re-
gion and continues to gather
national note by leaps and
bounds.
Backed by a fine, seven-
piece Simone Vitale band
plus two vocalists, the "Rock
Formations" concert intro-
duced his latest recording
(cassette and CD) by this
name, and was a complete
sell-out in the 300-capacity
Magic Bag Theatre.
David began with "As Time
Goes By," showing an amaz-
ing versatility of strength as
his closed eyes felt every note
. . . His smooth precision on
the ivories followed with a
Phantom of the Opera medley
. . . and then a magnificent
change-of-pace for David's
rendition of Chopin's Fanta-
sy-Impromptu.
There is much joyous and
stimulating sensitivity in the
soul of David Syme . . . Not
too many pianists can sud-
denly go into "Into My Life"
by the Beatles, or the Zom-
bies' hit "She's Not There," or
"Flying High" written by
David.
As if this wasn't enough of
a show of changing fluctua-
tion, his "Stairway To Heav-
en" rock classic by Led
Zeppelin was amazing . . .
The fun crowd had a great
time and vigorously ap-
plauded David after each
number . . . There were a lot
of surprised people . . . They
knew David was good, but not
this good!
He also does the vocals for
"On My Way," written by him
. . . And creates a beautiful
beat with "Somewhere In
Time."
Then David was outstand-
ing on Billy Joel's "Root Beer
Rag" as he worked the 88
keys like precision tools .. .
his left hand going so fast it
resembled a bouncing haze
. . . David's "Bohemian Rhap-
David Syme
sody" was an exciting classic
with very strong definition of
rhythmic emphasis . . . He
ended the first half his show
playing Eric Clapton's "Lay-
la."
The second half saw David
come on stage wearing a se-
quined cape to the music from
2001 — A Space Odyssey .. .
He has garnered national
fame as "The Human Juke
Box," playing requests over
the radio from all parts of the
country . . . Members of the
Magic Bag audience put
tunes on cards and David
played as many as he could
in the 15 minutes allotted for
this segment . . . They weren't
just pieces of songs but the
full measures of "Lara's
Theme," "Send In The
Clowns," "Jamaica Farewell,"
"Drift Away" and "McArthur
Park" . . . Then songstresses
Gia Vitale (no relation to Si-
mone) and Janice Franco re-
moved David's cape while
singing Joe Cocker's hit, "You
Can Leave Your Hat On."
His cross-over styling and
ripplin' finger movements
were choice as he went into
"Pumping Ivory," upbeat
adaptations of classical
themes with a slightly too-
short touch of Gershwin; fol-
lowed by "Sleepy Shores," and
"Baby Grand" written and
sung by David in tribute to
his piano . . . He joined the
entire band in "You Keep Me
Hanging On," a Supremes' hit
of great tempo.
David's uncanny knack of
altering paces is exemplified
again by "Linus and Lucy,"
Peanuts' TV show theme
song . . . and his strumming
on the black-and-white was
truly masterful in the next
medley . . . "A Nightingale
Sang In Berkley Square,"
"White Cliffs of Dover" and
the hauntingly beautiful "I'll
Be Seeing You."
Then came a pace-changer
that had people shaking their
heads in awe . . . Chuck
Berry's "Rock and Roll Music"
followed by the soft "Clair de
Lune" by Debussy.
The only thing missing was
more Gershwin on which
David is a true master .. .
People can listen to his "I Got
Rhythm" and "Rhapsody In
Blue" all night . . . The latter
by David is a standby in my
car's CD player.
Getting back to that "Rock
and Roll Music," David does
it with such fast-finger emo-
tion that if his piano could
talk, it would probably be
frantically yelling "Do it
,David! Man, this is the ab-
solute end!"
David's strong, potent fin-
gers left the packed audience
spellbound . . . The son of
Rabbi M. Robert and Sonya
Syme can play almost any-
thing by ear at first hearing
and has been compared with
great pianists of all time .. .
Wife Suzie is his manager,
and together with David's un-
canny talent, their band-
wagon is on a strong roll
upward with no stopping in
sight.
His works are on compact

and "Rock Formations" .. .
are available at all 35 Har-
mony House locations plus
the 22 Musicland stores here
among other dealers ... They
are also in most of the 900
MusicLands nationwide .. .
Another big seller is Rabbi
Syme's favorite . . . It's called
"A Christmas Treasure" and
will be at the above distrib-
utors about Oct. 20 . . . The
Temple Israel spiritual lead-
ers sends the collection of
yuletide songs played by son
David to his Christian
friends.
With all the accolades
given him in cities across the
country, David Syme has
