had invited David Duke," he
said. "That would be a slap in
the face of the black communi-
ty. The fact that Duke is a
racist negates anything posi-
tive he might have to say. That
goes for Farrakhan, as well."
The Anti-Defamation
League's approach was more
direct. In a letter to Rep.
Mfume, Abraham Foxman,
ADL's national director, said
the link with the Nation of Is-
lam would not be a "litmus test"
for relations between black leg-
islators and the Jewish com-
munity. But he did advise that
the ADL would not appear at
events with the Black Caucus
that included Mr. Farrakhan,
and implied that the decision
to embrace Mr. Farrakhan
could widen the black-Jewish
rift.
"We're not telling them what
to do," he said in an interview.
"But we are expressing our
right not to be there where we
are insulted or defamed. This
man's views are so contrary, in
so many respects, to what the
leadership of the black com-
munity believes in. His views
are racist, as well as anti-Se-
mitic. Is this the leadership the
black community aspires to?

Most Visitors
Are Not Jews

Officials at the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum were a lit-
tle surprised by the results of
the first comprehensive poll of
patrons.
Contrary to the predictions
of some skeptics, a majority of
the museum's visitors during
the summer months were not
Jewish, according to data re-
leased this week. Specifically,
26 percent of the 3,200 muse-
um-goers surveyed identified
themselves as Protestant, 22
percent as Catholic and 38 per-
cent as Jewish.
Almost half said the muse-
um was first on their itineraries
of museums in Washington.
Twenty-six percent of the out-
of-town visitors revealed that
they had traveled here specif-
ically to visit the museum.
As of early this month, more
than 500,000 people had visit-
ed the museum since it's April
opening, far above early pre-
dictions.
"The high-than-expected
numbers do cause additional
pressure on the museum," said
Miles Lerman, chair of the
Holocaust Memorial Council.
"But it's a positive kind of pres-
sure."
Mr. Lerman said the fact
that three-fifths of this sum-
mer's visitors were non-Jews
shows the museum is fulfilling
its purpose:
