The Clinton administra-
tion has been active in seek-
ing an end to the boycott.
Mr. Christopher also
called on the U.S. Congress
to amend "statutes that in-
hibit dealing with the PLO
and are really quite anti-
quated at this time."
The Palestine Liberation
Organization, with which
the Clinton administration
recently renewed its dia-
logue, is reportedly seeking
to open a diplomatic office
here by next month.
But opening an office
would require amendments
to congressional legislation
barring certain dealings
with the PLO, long regarded
as a terrorist organization.
Mr. Christopher also
issued a warning to "places
like Tehran, Baghdad, and
Tripoli" that have condemn-
ed the Israeli- Palestinian
agreement.
"Let me make clear that
we are committed to seeing
that the forces of moderation
in the region are stronger
than the forces of ex-
tremism," he said.
Looking at the larger pic-
ture of American foreign
policy, Mr. Christopher
made a strong case for a con-
tinued U.S. international
role, using examples of suc-
cessful American policies in
the Middle East and
elsewhere.
"Were it not for sustained
American involvement over
the last four decades, we
would not be on the road to
peace in the Middle East,"
he said.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
unemployment rate dropped
a full percentage point to 10
percent during the second
quarter of 1993, according to
the Central Bureau of
Statistics.
In the first quarter of the
year, unemployment had
stood at 11 percent of the
workforce.
The bureau said the drop
was due in large part to the
closure of the administered
territories in March, which
led to the creation of 19,700
new jobs for Israelis in the
April-June quarter.
In the first quarter, 39,000
new jobs had been created.
During the first half of the
year the number of people
employed grew by 3.3 per-
cent over the last half of
1992, and stood at 1,729,300. ❑
