it most. It is the framework
of religious life to embrace
and fight for those who can-
not."
He added, "Typically, in
the beginning of the AIDS
epidemic, the parts of reli-
gious communities that
were the most judgmental
and least accepting took the
limelight — declaring this
as God's punishment. The
majority of the religious
community has to be forth-
right in fighting that atti-
tude born of homophobia.
"The opinion that people
infected with the HIV virus
should not be helped but
face moral judgment — that
has nothing to do with reli-
gion as I know it."
Mr. Rose said Detroit is
one of about 20 cities which
have formed a specifically
Jewish response to AIDS,

from fully staffed agencies
to grass-roots education
efforts. He was quick to add
that many small congrega-
tions, in sometimes unlikely
places, are responding.
"I've had positive and neg-
ative experiences trying to
mobilize resources in the
Jewish community for AIDS.
The Jewish community
cares, but AIDS is not a pri-
ority. Priorities get reflected
in how resources get allocat-
ed," Mr. Rose said. "I know
of individual Jews giving
large donations to care and
research efforts. But it's
very hard to fund specifical-
ly Jewish efforts." D
