The PLO ran an adver- tisement in the A l - Kuds daily in east Jerusalem, inviting Palesti- nians between the ages of 18 to 35 to join the newly form- ing Palestinian police force. Under the terms of the landmark Israeli-PLO agreement signed last week in Washington, the Palestin- ians were authorized to begin building a police force immediately after the sign- ing. The core of the force was to come from PLO fighters from outside Gaza and Jericho. The ad asked prospective candidates to appear at the local offices of the PLO. The address was not given, but it was assumed that the recruitment would take place at Orient House in east Jerusalem, which houses the offices of the Palestinian delegation to the Middle East peace talks. Similar recruitment offices were to be opened within the next few days in the Gaza Strip. Candidates were required to be in good health and have at least a high school education. Palestinians in Jordan are currently undergoing a police- training program, which was scheduled to end shortly. Egypt has also offered to help train a Palestinian police force. Some 24 Gaza residents have already left for Egypt, where they were expected to undergo training at the police school in Cairo. The group from Gaza was led by Ibrahim Mohana, a former officer in the Israeli- controlled Gaza police force until the intifada broke out in 1987.
