A native of Lemberg (Lvov), Poland, Mr. Teicholz refused a Nazi request in 1942 to become president of the city's Judenrat, or Jewish council, a role that would have forced him to turn Jews over to their deaths. Instead, he escaped and became a partisan fighter against the Nazis. He helped organize the so-called Schweitzer Action to save Jewish children in Poland. He became the leader of the Jewish underground in Budapest. Mr. Teicholz was an assis- tant to Swedish diplomat
