ing the right length, color and
correctly cut chips," said Ron
Lapid, Burger Ranch manag-
ing director. "We would also
like to get french fries at in-
ternationally accepted prices
and standards."

Minister Micha Harish's re-
cent surprise announcement
to conditionally open the
country to imports of french
fried potatoes was reportedly
made to protect local growers
and fry producers, who would
be left in a worse position as
a result of the High Court rul-
ing. French-fry imports will
be subject to tariffs and a
special fund will compensate
those affected by the decision.
Combined pressure tactics
from Burger Ranch and
McDonald's appear to be suc-
ceeding. If this proves to be
the case, McDonald's will not
only be able to import its own
potatoes but will have opened
doors of fast food outlets to
other potential importers. ❑

Until two weeks ago, Jericho
— believed to be the world's
oldest continually inhabited
human settlement — was
viewed as not much more
',Lan a backwater Palestinian
town that history had long
since passed by.
But now, much of the world
is talking about this town,
which, if a final peace accord be-
tween Israel and the Palestini-
ans is approved, is likely to
become Yasser Arafat's new
home — a mere 22 mites from
Jerusalem.
The first of the seven
Canaanite nations Joshua and
the Israelites defeated after
crossing the Jordan River, Jeri-
cho's downfall is certainly the
best known.
Spies were sent into the city,
and after they returned, Joshua
was ready to move. The priests
carried the Ark of the Covenant
outside the walls of the city for
six days. On the seventh day,
after circling Jericho seven
more times, there was a blast
of trumpets, and, tradition has
it, the walls collapsed.
Today, a nondescript hillock
known as Tel Jericho is all that
remains of the original biblical
city. Some archaeologists be-
lieve the site was inhabited as
long as 6,000 years before the
Israelite victory.
Today, Jericho is the West
Bank's second most-developed
tourist area after Bethlehem. L
