dren" when they came over
for dinner, mixing milk and
meat.
Jewish homelife wasn't so
much a mishmash as "a
combination way of observ-
ing Judaism."
A close-knit family, the
Wassersteins are no relation
to the Rosenswiegs, insists
the playwright. Yes, there
are similarities: Brother
Bruce is a banker and San-
dra Wasserstein Meyer, the
oldest of the three Wassers-
tein sisters, is an officer for
Citibank. Sister Georgette,
while she doesn't run tours
for her sisterhood as
Gorgeous does, was
nicknamed Gorgeous as a
child.
And Wendy the writer .
well, she identifies with
Pfeni, also a writer, always
looking for an excuse not to
write, which has been the
case occasionally with the
playwright in the past.
But Ms.Wasserstein did
not write this play to
showcase her family. "I
didn't want to write a play
about me again. I wanted to
write about a new genera-
tion," she says.
Wendy Wasserstein has
generated an intriguing look
at women who normally
don't get their due on stage.
The play opens with Sara
celebrating her 54th birth-
day. Is it a new beginning for
middle-aged female
characters?
"I don't see that many
women of this age depicted
on stage," says the
playwright, proud to be shin-
ing the spotlight on them.
It is a new stage for Ms.
Wasserstein, also proud that
her post-50 Sara has fallen
for and found a man her age
— Merv, the furrier.
"Actually," kibbitzes the
playwright, "this play is a
gift for my sister Sandra,"
single and twice divorced. "I
wrote it for her. I'd like her
to meet a furrier!"
Theatergoers will be
meeting up with Ms.
Wasserstein again soon. The
playwright is "finishing up
some old deadlines," she
says.
With all the awards in her
life, Wendy Wasserstein
realizes she can't please
everyone, however.
Her mother, the source of
the mother character in Isn't
It Roman tic, has been
known to carp that Wendy
should husband some of her
energy for finding a man and
marriage.
Not that that's the only
thing on her mind. "I just
want to say that my mother
is really proud of me," notes
Ms. Wasserstein.
