Los Angeles (JTA) — In a
rare display of solidarity, the
Anti-Defamation League is
backing a demand by the
American-Arab Anti-
Discrimination Committee
that the Walt Disney Studio
further alter a song's lyrics
in its mega-hit animated
feature film Aladdin.
The Arab group's primary
target was the film's open-
ing song, "Arabian Nights,"
whose lyrics went like this:
"Oh, I come from a land,
from a faraway place where
the caravan camels roam.
Where they cut off your ear if
they don't like your face, It's
barbaric, but hey, it's home."
Just how offensive these lines
sounded to Arab ears was il-
lustrated by Casey Kasem, a
popular Los Angeles radio
personality of Lebanese de-
. scent.
He asked in a letter to the
Los Angeles Times how
Latinos would react to: Oh, I
come from a land where they
sleep in the sun And the
gangs of bandidos roam.
Where they hang you in jail,
if you don't have the bail,
It's barbaric, but hey, it's
home.
Or, Jewish/Israeli reaction
to: Oh, I come from a land
where religion is law And
the prophets and rabbis
roam. Where they stone you
to death if you question the
faith, It's barbaric, but hey,
it's home.
After negotiations with
the Arab-American group,
Disney executives agreed to
change the lyrics in its up-
coming home video version
of the film, which has al-
ready grossed more than
$200 million in its theatrical
release.
Disney will now use an
alternate version written by
the song's late lyricist
Howard Ashman. The re-
vised version reads: Oh, I
come from a land, from a
faraway place Where the
caravan camels roam.
Where it's flat and immense
And the heat is intense, It's
barbaric, but hey, it's home.
The Arab-Americans were
pleased, but not satisfied,
demanding that the word
"barbaric" also be stricken.
The ADL agreed with this
demand and sent a letter to
Disney Chairman Michael
Eisner. Deleting "barbaric,"
the ADL maintained, would
be "in keeping with the
positive image of the Disney
name and reputation."
There has been no reply so
far from Eisner.
