Call The Jewish News 354-5959 If you want to visit Israel for the first time or go on a return trip, the Jewish Federation and the United Jewish Appeal have several trips planned for this winter. Trips are offered for adults of all ages and for families. Each mission offers special events, such as planting trees in Israel, visiting Youth Aliyah villages and voca- tional retraining programs, and meeting kibbutzniks, soldiers and young Israeli professionals. While in Jerusalem on these missions, participants will be briefed by leaders of government on key issues related to the peace process, the absorption of immigrants and Israel's economic needs. Mission-goers also will get an in-depth look at the ex- periences and realities of Israrel today. They will visit new immigrants at absorp- tion centers and learn about the initial stages of their resettlement. Participants will travel throughout the Jewish state, where they will observe reset- tlement efforts on behalf of the Jews of the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia and meet with recently arrived immi- grants. Singles nationwide will join the Dec. 19-30 UJA Hatikvah National Winter Singles Mis- sion to Israel, which will feature two days in Eilat. The mission, which in- cludes five-star hotel accom- modations, will stay over- night in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Nof Ginosar in the north and Eilat in the south, where winter temperatures are in the 70-80 degree range. University student leaders will have the opportunity to travel with their peers from across the country on the Dec. 26-Jan. 4 UJA National Stu- dent Leadership Mission. In addition, the UJA Win- ter Young Adults Mission is geared to the active set in their mid-20s. Parents, children and grandparents also are seeing Israel on the Dec. 22-31 UJA Family Mission. Included are special youth programs de- signed to meet the needs of children from age 7 to adult. The missions include round- trip air fare from New York, deluxe accommodations (dou- ble occupancy), transporta- tion, guides, gratuities and most meals. Israel-only op- tions also may be available. Museum Opens New Exhibit A new exhibition featuring a handmade art book opens at Yeshiva University Museum Sept. 12. The text of this limited edition Book of Jonah is be Hebrew calligrapher David Moss of Jerusalem, and the book is illustrated with five original etchings by Mordechai Beck, also of Jerusalem. This art publication is the result of the collaboration bet- ween Mr. Moss and Mr. Beck and was created entirely in Israel. The paper is hand- made and the book was printed on an 1886 English Albion hand press, imported to Israel by Eliezer Ben Yehudah (1858-1922), the father of modern Hebrew. The etchings were executed at the Jerusalem Print Workshop. Funding for "The Book of Jonah" is provided, in part, by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. It will re- main on display through December 1993 at 2520 Amsterdam Avenue at West 185th Street, Manhattan.
