blacks and Jews having met
in the circumstance of those
camps, and that is what peo-
ple embrace."
AJCommittee's Stern
called that attitude a kind of
racism.
"People seeing black
soldiers as almost a fungible
commodity, saying 'This
unit or that, it doesn't
matter what the truth is,
there were black soldiers
liberating the camps,' de-
means the meaning of what
some really did," said Mr.
Stern.
Ironically, despite the con-
troversy around the Lib-
erators,the flawed film is
helping the veterans of the
761st Tank Battalion get
some long-overdue recogni-
tion, said the battalion's
Latimer.
Fort Hood, Texas, where
the battalion trained before

being sent to Europe, is try-
ing to raise money for a
monument to honor the bat-
talion's heroism at Gunskir-
chen Lager. A similar
monument has been donated
by a Jew, who wants to re-
main anonymous, to be
erected at Fort Knox, in
Kentucky, said Mr. Latimer.
And an independent, New
York-based company called
Laurel Entertainment is
now developing a commer-
cial film, to be released in
theaters nationwide, based
on the true history of the
761st.
Laurel Entertainment had
been working on the Lib-
erators with Mr. Miles and
Ms. Rosenblum, but severed
its relationship when the
film's flaws became ap-
parent earlier this year, said
Lucille Bruce, Laurel's
manager of development. E

Right-Wing Danger
Is Underestimated

Bonn (JTA) — The leader of
Germany's Jewish commun-
ity has criticized German
politicians for
underestimating the threat
of right-wing violence and
concentrating too much on
left-wing extremists.
Ignatz Bubis said a dem-
onstration by some 500 neo-
Nazis two weeks ago in the
central German town of
Fulda unfortunately left an
indelible impression that the
town's police protected the
neo- Nazis.
But he cautioned against
removing anyone from office
to pay for this offense, as
such a move would be
counterproductive. Fulda
Mayor Wolfgang Hamberger
wholeheartedly agreed with
Mr. Bubis.
Germany's interior min-
ister was recently forced to
step down after a govern-
ment crackdown on left-wing
activists turned bloody.
The police force in the
town of Fulda was harshly
criticized by both Jewish and
government leaders for let-
ting the neo-Nazis march in
the parade, which was held
to honor Rudolf Hess,
Hitler's deputy, on the an-
niversary of his death.
Despite an attempt by
police throughout Germany
to blockade routes leading to
the Fulda rally, a large
number of right-wing ex-
tremists managed to gather
in the town.
Mr. Bubis said that left-
wing activists attempting to

demonstrate against the
neo-Nazi marchers were
stopped by the Fulda police,
who in turn protected the
right-wing extremists.
Hans Eichel, the prime
minister of the state of
Hesse, in which Fulda is
located, emphasized that
right-wing violence cannot
be battled "only with
words."
And he warned that a long
stretch of high joblessness
could worsen right-wing
violence.
Contesting this response,
Fritz Hertle, a member of
the left-wing Green Party,
cited the situation in Spain,
where joblessness is 25 per-
cent but where there have
been no reported attacks
against foreigners.
Benjamin Navon, the
Israeli ambassador to Ger-
many, who is nearing the
end of his term, said it is the
responsibility of the police to
put an end to the escalation
of right-wing violence, which
has been multiplying dra-
matically.
Mr. Navon said he believes
the police recognize that en-
ding right-wing violence is
their responsibility but add-
ed that there is a need for
better education of children
about Nazism and neo-
e Nazism.
"In Germany it must
always be shown where
right-wing violence has led
in the past, and into what
misery it has brought the
German people," he said. LI
