Mr. Miles on the film as a
consultant, though he was
not asked for permission to
use his name and was never
asked by them about his unit
being at Dachau or Buchen-
wald.
"We certainly had a good
enough record that no one
needs to add to it," said Mr.
Latimer. "We all feel a little
used by Miles and
Rosenblum."
E.G. McConnell, a member
of the 761st, had worked
with Mr. Miles and Ms.
Rosenblum until, he said, he
came to see, during filming,
that they were misrepresen-
ting what had happened.
"There's so much to be told
that these people wouldn't
tell. Imagine how I felt 50
years later that they
distorted our story. This
beautifully prepared docu-
mentary could have done so
much to heal the wounds."
According to Kenneth
Stern, a staff member of the
American Jewish Com-
mittee who conducted his
own investigation into the
accuracy of the documen-

demand accuracy, especially

history.

that these guys (the black
soldiers) have fought three
battles in the last 50 years:
to be able to fight in World
War II, to have their ac-
complishments noted and to
have their history recorded
correctly.
"The producers' reaction
does not help in fighting that
prejudice" that the veterans
have had to face in their
effort to be recognized for
their heroism, said Mr.
Stern.
Abraham Foxman, na-
tional director of the Anti-
Defamation League, said the
producers' reaction "is sad.
They got caught in a lie and
strike out any way they
know how."
Mr. Foxman said that it is
"important that institutions
of the caliber of WNET are
willing to set the record
straight, though it may be
embarrassing to them and
others to do so."
The Rev. Jackson had been
planning to screen the Lib-
erators around the country,
even after controversy over
the film's veracity became
clear in February.
He was not available for
comment, but in February
he said, "The details of the
film are not as much the
issue as the message of
