KEREN KAYEMETH LEISRAEL

(An

by Eli Scherr

At this season of the year, we reflect on both the past and the future. At JNF we can be thankful that the past has been
filled with accomplishment and the future with challenge.
Jewish National Fund continues to make progress providing those things which improve life for all the people of Is-
rael. However, ongoing developments in the Mideast as well as a continuing influx of new immigrants create a future
of challenge which can be met only by unfailing effort. Your support has been vital to our past accomplishments and
will remain vital to our future efforts.
The themes and messages of the Days of Awe are many. I would like to take this opportunity to share one such message with you. The
accompanying article by Ruth W. Popkin, National President ofJewish National Fund, is addressed to all friends and supporters ofJNF.
Her message reminds us that as we reflect on the blessings of the past, we must never forget the obligations of the future.
On a personal note, all of us at the Jewish National Fund join in extending best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year to all. We all
pray for a year of success, progress and peace for our people in Israel and throughout the world.

A Rosh Hashanah 5754 Message

By Ruth W. Popkiu,
National President of JNF.

Another year. Another beginning. Another promise.
Rosh hashanah begins the ten Days of Awe which culminate on Yom Kippur. This time in Jewish life is G-d's special gift. We are given
the opportunity through prayer and introspection to erase past sins and start anew. However, while we erase past sins, we are not per-
mitted to erase past promises. These we must fulfill.
The Rosh Hashanah prayers help us to count our blessings and thank G-d for the privilege of living in a time when there is a Jewish
homeland and when countless Jews are free at last from years of persecution and oppression. How wonderful to be able to witness the
reawakening ofJudaism in those who were long denied the right to practice their faith!
Each year, when the Days of Awe come to a conclusion, we are spiritually renewed but we continue to live in
the same place with familiar surroundings. On the other hand, thousands ofJews from the former Soviet
Union, Ethiopia and other parts of the world are now physically starting new lives in a strange country with
customs and life styles very different from that which they are used to. We worked, lobbied, demonstrated
and prayed for these Jews to be freed. Now, our prayers have been answered. Now, we must take the next
step and fulfill our promise.
The Jewish National Fund, with its Operation Promised Land Campaign, is helping to fulfill the promise
made by Jews around the world. It has touched the lives of tens of thousands of immigrants, providing them
with housing sites, recreation centers, jobs, summer camps and water. However, there are thousands of new
immigrants who are still struggling to make a living in Israel and need our help. By supporting the Jewish
National Fund, you help us give all Israelis a better quality of life.
Personally, and on behalf of the entire JNF family, I wish to extend good wishes for a happy and healthy -
New Year of 5754 and ask you to join with us in our cause. Let the New Year bring Israel and her people a
life filled with the blessings of progress, growth, security and peace.
