handle it if he gets sick?"
"That way," she said, "you
end up having situations to
deal with, as opposed to
having problems to deal
with."
It used to be that working
parents sat around talking
about their children, said
the fifth speaker, tho Area
Agency on Aging's director
of planning and advocacy,
James McGuire. Now they
discuss their parents.
Mr. McGuire recommend-
ed that adults approach
elder care as do profession-
als: "Break it down to its
simplest elements."
Individuals with aged
parents need to ask them-
selves exactly what activi-

ties of daily living their
mothers and fathers can
handle. Can they groom
themselves? Fix their own
meals? Handle personal
care? Mow the lawn?
Most likely a parent will
be able to do some of these,
and probably outside help is
available for the rest, Mr.
McGuire said. He noted that
hot meals could be brought
in, or bathing assistance
could be provided through
home health-care agencies.
Numerous federal and
state agencies serve as

referral services for elder
care, Mr. McGuire said.
The final speaker, attor-
ney Deborah Gordon of
Stark & Gordon, discussed
"How to Advocate for
Yourself in the Workplace."
She stressed the importance
of knowing details of compa-
ny policy on issues like
maternity leave.
The new Family Leave
Act guarantees 12 weeks'
leave, at companies with 50
or more employees, for any
number of family-care con-
cerns including adoption
and helping a sick spouse.
The leave includes contin-
ued benefits, but is unpaid.
Ms. Gordon said a prima-
ry concern in the coming
years will be job termina-
tion for elderly employees.
Often, they are highly paid
because they have been for
many years with the same
business. Supervisors, fac-
ing tough economic times,
may opt to let these workers
go and hire new employees
at a lower salary.
If someone believes he
has been wrongly dis-
charged, he should first con-
sider, "Did my employer
have a legitimate concern?"
Ms. Gordon said. Then he
should approach his super-
visor and see if the problem
can be worked out. "Ask, are
there areas you want me to
work on?" If all else fails,
she said, "talk to an attor-
ney."
