with practicaql teaching
methods. In the first lesson,
Mr. Horani reads an excerpt
from an essay written by Mr.
Korczak in 1910 about the
situation of the Poles and the
Jews: "Here are brothers in
the same land: generations of
shared destiny and hardship
. . . The same sun rises for us,
the same hail destroys our
crops and the same soil covers
the remains of our fathers .. .
We had more tears than
smiles, but neither you nor us
are to blame. If we are poor,
let us help each other; if we
are sad, let us comfort each
other. So that good fortune
will shine upon us." Not sur-
prisingly, many of Mr.
Horani's students, until
enlightened, think this has
been written about the Arab-
Israeli conflict.
Through the center, Mr.
Horani also translated
Pedagogical Essays of Korc-
zak into Arabic. "This is an
unprecedented work," says
Vladimir Halperin, president
of the Swiss Association. "At
the recent Korczak seminar
held in Moscow, our work in
Israel took center stage." On
a recent trip to Geneva for the
center, Mr. Horani was in-
vited to meet Jordanian,
Lebanese and Egyptian
educational ministers, all of
whom requested additional
translations of Mr. Korczak's
works. "Other Arab countries
are also expected to show an
interest," says Mr. Keich.
The center does not deal
solely with Arab-Jewish
understanding, however.
Second-year Israeli student
Granit Almog researched and
organized material for a
Holocaust Memorial Day ex-
hibition on Janusz Korczak
and the children of the War-
saw Ghetto. A lack of original
material prompted her to
travel to the Holocaust
Museum at Kibbutz
Lochamei HaGhettaot, whose
founding members are sur-
vivors of the Warsaw Ghetto.
"I started to interview people
and found myself being drawn
deeper into the project," she
says.
At the kibbutz, Ms. Almog
hit upon a treasure — a
number of works by Mr. Korc-
zak, some unpublished, which
had been hidden by a Polish
Christian woman during
WWII and which recently ar-
rived in Israel.
Two Coffins, tells two pre-
viously unknown tales of
two children, aged 3 and 15,
who died in the Holocaust. At
a very emotional Holocaust
Memorial Day ceremony at
the college, Ms. Almog read
one of them aloud and the
tears flowed silently down the
faces of the audience. E
