after two years. "I was
miserable," says Reena. "We
would work for hours and
then I would go home and
cry."
Vinod was ready to go back
to sea, but Reena persuaded
him to give Israel one more
try. They rented space near
Dizengoff Square in
downtown Tel Aviv and open-
ed their first Tandoori
restaurant, offering authentic
North Indian food — a rarity
in Israel at the time. Now one
of Tel Aviv's most popular
eating houses, branches have
since opened in Herzliya,
Eilat, Tiberias and now
Jerusalem.
The secret of their success?
"My belief in God and my Far
Eastern mentality," she says.
We are raised to be patient
and understanding and to
work hard!'
Hard work it certainly has
been. To this day, the couple
work 16 hours a day and keep
a sharp eye on every aspect of
their business.
"We've had to sacrifice a lot
by working so hard," she ad-
mits, "particularly time with
our children. On the other
hand, the rewards have been
great, too!' ❑

H
e was a young man,
probably in his twen-
ties, and most likely
an important member
of the local Mediterranean
population 8,500 years ago.
He belonged to a society
which was in transition, hav-
ing left the world of hunters
to become settlers of villages
and cultivators of the land.
This man's skull was
recently uncovered in Israel.
While other, similar skulls
from the pre-pottery Neolithic
period have been unearthed
in parts of Israel, Jordan and
Syria, this skull is reported to
be the most well-preserved ex-
ample of its kind discovered
so far in the region.
Dr. Nigel Goring-Morris,
who led the excavations near
Kibbutz Kfar Hachoresh in
the Galilee on behalf of the
Israel Antiquities Authority,
said that the fact that the
front part of the skull was
covered with a plaster-cast
"death mask" helped to
recreate the man's facial
characteristics. The mask,
the archaeologist said, in-
dicated that the man was a
respected member of his com-
munity. ❑
