he recent opening in
Jerusalem's Hilton ho-
tel of the kosher Indian
restaurant Kohinoor
signified not only the con-
tinued popularity of Indian
food in a country better
known for falafel, but the per-
sonal success of Reena and
Vinod Pushkarna, the pro-
prietors of a popular chain of
Indian restaurants in Israel.
Among the most prominent
and successful members of
Israel's 40,000 strong Indian
community, the Pushkarnas
claim that Israel's business
climate can be profitable if
you're ready to work hard.
"There's a lot Israel can offer
you," says Reena. "You can
reach the top. I know. After
nine years, I've come to know
even the president and prime
minister."
Raised in a well-to-do Bom-
bay family, with an Iraqi
Jewish mother and a Sikh ar-

"My father is not Orthodox

she wishes," says Reena. "We

religions and I never ex-
perienced any anti-Semitism.
We had the best of both
worlds."
When the time came for
Reena to marry, her parents
arranged a match with
Vinod, an Indian merchant
navy captain and son of a
distinguished academic. For
10 years she lived the life of
a marine captain's wife, sail-
ing all over the world. But
when their two children
reached school age, they
realized things had to change.
The Pushkarnas had
visited Israel several times,
and decided that settling here
was their best option.
"Although Vinod is not
Jewish, he is open and
respectful of Judaism. The
children are Jewish and this
is their home. They will serve
in the army when the time
comes."
The couple first opened a
vegetarian Indian take-away
restaurant at an unsuitable
location in Tel Aviv. It failed
