A coronation chain, set with hundreds of diamonds, is another remarkable piece. The third section contains work by the House of Faberge, one of a number of jewelers who came from Europe to work at the Tsarist court. Y Rapoport, a Jewish craft- sman, was one of the few of their artisans allowed to sign his name next to the House of Faberge mark. According to the museum's curator, Noah Tal, "Rapoport was con- sidered a very important jeweler and maker of objets d'art in the House of Faberge." The reactions to his fabulous jasper, silver and gold vase show the fascina- tion his work still holds today. Included in the Faberge col- lection are examples of his "rough gold" technique, which has an almost fluid tex- ture and looks like unworked gold. The final section displays work by contemporary Rus- sian artists, ordered by the state treasury to augment art collections of great economic value. One such piece is the White Rose of Moscow (1970), a pin containing 1,466 diamonds whose leaves are attached with tiny clips which allow them to be in constant movement. One Israeli lady appreciatively commented, "This beats the British crown jewels!" So why did the Russians choose to show these fabulous pieces for the first time ever in Israel? Israel's leading role as a diamond cutting and pro- cessing center for diamonds was clearly a factor. But ac- cording to Mr. Rabin at the exhibition's opening, it was to herald "a new era of fruitful co-operation between the two countries." And this new friendship is certainly as priceless as some of the jewels at this exciting exhibition. ❑ WXPS We wish our family and friends a very healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. 13.11D11 navz illt13"2 to all our friends and relatives.
