their first prayerbook in first
grade, when they are blessed
by the Sephardi chief rabbi.
These same children will sit
in the succah of a Conser-
vative rabbi and learn about
Succot. They read original
text, learn about Jewish
values such as giving charity,
visiting the sick, honoring
their elders, etc., and then ac-
tualize this in their day-to-
day activities.
Says Oren, a 13-year-old in
the TALI program, "My
parents are both traditional,
and we celebrate the holidays,
but now I feel like my Jewish
identity belongs to me."
"We respect the decision of
each family on how they
choose to be Jewish," says
TALI Pedagogic Counselor
David Brody.
Says Shelly Brinn, a new
immigrant from the United
States who is trying to start
a TALI nursery school in her
Jerusalem neighborhood, and
facing opposition from the ci-
ty's religious faction, "TALI is
a more critical approach in
which understanding our
tradition is important, but

The program runs
in secular state
schools alongside

curriculum.

the children are able to
evaluate for themselves their
approach to the religion."
For many non-practicing
parents, sending their
children to a religious school,
while not fully observing the
religion at home causes con-
flict for the child. "However,"
says Mr. Brody, "These same
parents want their children to
know more than they know
about the religion. It is possi-
ble for a child in Israel to go
through the secular educa-
tional system without learn-
ing to pray in the synagogue,
without knowing the basic
tenets of Jewish life.."
Educational activities also
include parent/child work-
shops, trips and classes
together for celebrating the
holidays and the Sabbath. It
offers many families the
chance to develop their own
way to express their Judaism
at home.
Says Dorothy Harman, who
has been involved in TALI
since its inception, "The
greatest problem facing TALI
today is the lack of a cadre of
qualified teachers for our
special curriculum. We have
small classes and committed
parents, but we need a core
faculty to carry the program
forward.." E
