armers in Israel's Ne-
gev desert are literally
enjoying the sweet
taste of success. Last
winter season they exported
some $40,000 worth of
tomatoes to Germany and
Britain, where they fetched
premium prices, marketed
under the brand name of
Carmel Desert Sweet.
The trial cultivation of
tomatoes began several years
ago at the Desert Agriculture
Negev Experimental Center.
The tomatoes are watered
from the vast reserves of
geothermal water contained
beneath the surface of the
desert. This water is warm,
stagnant and brackish.

table twists of nature, the

relatively high saline content
of the water produces sweeter
tomatoes. In effect, the ex-
cessive salt and inferior quali-
ty of the water causes the
tomato plants to strain
harder, and thus a superior
quality produce, with a good
shelf life, grows.
Yankele Moscovitch, direc-
tor of research and develop-
ment at the Desert Agricul-
ture Negev Experimental
Center, says, "We are already
cooperating with Egypt on a
joint project with their
farmers to grow desert sweet
tomatoes in the Sinai. This
method of growing tomatoe s
in geothermal water has im
plications for all countrie s
with reserves beneath th e
desert and arid regions."
