AJCongress and JCRC
withdrew from the parlia-
ment privately in a letter
delivered to the parliament's
chairman early in the eve-
ning before the Rev. Far-
rakhan's presentation.
The Rev. Farrakhan was
scheduled to speak for 45
minutes on"Faith: The
African American Family.
e ' , Tied this was a topic
he was l ore ,z..hoose, yet
he touched on it for
than five minutes, and his
presentation ran twice as
long as planned.
His talk included a mix of
many that he has given over
the past years, in which he
claimed he was working for
peace while at the same time
espousing anti-white, anti-
Christian and anti- Jewish
views.
More than 500 people at-
tended his speech, many of
them his followers, and his
remarks were warmly
received with a standing
ovation.
In their letters to the
parliament chairman, the
Jewish organizations ex-
pressed their continued sup-
port for interfaith work in
the future.
The AJCommittee,
AJCongress and JCRC end-
ed their letter by stating
that they "deeply hope that
this particular session will
not inordinately disrupt the
parliament in the
fulfillment of its goals."
They wrote that they
welcomed the opportunity to
join with others "in building
fruitful interfaith relations
in the years ahead." ❑

Sentence Set
For Israeli Spy

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A colonel
in the Israeli reserves has
been sentenced to 12 years
in prison for engaging in
"serious espionage" on
behalf of the former Soviet
Union.
A district court here
reached the verdict against
Shimon Levinson, 60, in a
trial that began in May
1991.
No details of the charges or
trial have been allowed to be
published, but it is known
that Levinson left the Israel
Defense Force in 1983.
He was reportedly embit-
tered by the fact that he had
been passed over for promo-
tion and had not reached the
rank of brigadier general
before his retirement.
Following his IDF service,
Mr. Levinson joined the staff
of the United Nations, which
sent him to Bangkok,
Thailand. ❑
