Sybaris Hosts
Werner's

Woods

The Sybaris Gallery has
moved to 202 E. Third Street,
Royal Oak. The inaugural ex-
hibition includes the carved
wood furniture and sculpture
of Howard Werner. The gal-
lery also will begin holding
one-person and small-group
shows to highlight the work of
some of this country's
jewelers. The first to be ex-
hibited will be Julie Anne
Mihalisin.
Ms. Mihalisin fashions
molten glass and precious
metal into brooches,
necklaces and earrings. By
combining these materials,
she strives to demonstrate,
through juxtaposition, the
unique beauty of both media.
Rather than have a setting
cast to fit the jewel, the jewel
(glass) has been cast to fit the
setting (a precious metal
form).
The artist also aims to
create designs that are new
yet familiar, by appealing to
our desire for honesty and our
attachment to natural forms.
Howard Werner's massive
chaise lounges, chairs and
geometrically intricate ben-
ches and tables will be on
display. To make these sen-
sual pieces of furniture and
sculpture, Mn Werner uses a
direct carve process in which
the forms are roughed out of
the log with a chainsaw.
While the chainsaw looks like
an imprecise tool, control is a
skill that Mr. Werner has
mastered. At the outset, the
material plays little part in
Mr. Werner's design process.
After the initial work, the
pieces are left to cure for a
minimum of one year. The
wood may crack or distort,
but ulitmately it stabilizes.
At that point, Mr. Werner
finishes the pieces with a
linseed oil and urethane mix-
ture that maintains the feel
and look of the wood.
Gallery hours are Tuesday-
Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

All the times run into the
past, yet the past is not full.
