Yom Kippur 1993/5754

Isaiah: "The hungry and the wretched poor" their fast and ours

Groups Hail
Police Action

Montreal (JTA) — Jewish
community leaders are ap-
plauding the action taken by
police here recently against
a black group considered to
be racist and anti-Semitic.
Montreal police last month
raided the headquarters of
Black House, the local
chapter of the Nation of
Islam, led by Louis Far-
rakhan in the United States.
Black House first made
news here last May, when it
sponsored a speech at Con-
cordia University by Khallid
Abdul Muhammed, the Rev.
Fa_nukhan's assistant.
Since then, the group has
made public pro-
nouncements against Jews
and homosexuals. B'nai
B'rith Canada's League for
Human Rights received four
facsimile transmissions from
Black House beginning on
May 21, addressed "To those
bastards among the so-
called Jews."
They accuse Jewish com-
munity members of ex-
ploiting blacks, being
responsible for a continuing
black holocaust and being
behind the spread of AIDS
and syphilis.
League Chairman Stephen
Scheinberg expressed satis-
faction with police efforts,
saying that "Black House
along with the Heritage
Front constitute two of the
most vile racist groups func-
tioning in Canada." The
Heritage Front is a white
supremacist group.
League spokesman
Jonathan Schneiderman
pointed out that Montreal's
organized black community
"in large measure has re-
jected Black House." Now
"it is up to our political
leadership and law enforce-
ment to put a stop to their
hate," he added.
League officials had been
in constant touch with police
regarding the matter and
had been assured that an in-
vestigation was in progress.
B'nai B'rith has considered
asking that charges be
brought against Black
House official Shola Paul
Martinet following an arti-
cle in the Gazette, the local
newspaper, which quoted
him threatening violence
against the Jewish commun-
ity.
Spokesmen for the Cana-
dian Jewish Congress also
applauded police efforts, as
well as the refusal of Cana-
dian authorities to grant
refugee status to the Black
House "frontman," Sola Abel
Lenlehin. ❑

MAZON, since our beginning almost eight years ago, has spoken of our shared ability to build a
bridge between the relative abundance in our lives and the deprivation suffered by those among
us who are so poor as to be hungry. Many are close by in our own communities and some are in
such faraway places as Sarajevo, where a cruel war rages against a civilian population. These
people are not beyond our reach, to the extent that you support MAZON's efforts.

Yom Kippur is a time for prayers and sermons, fasting and true teshuvah — sincere repentance. It
is also a time to provide to those whom Isaiah called the hungry and the wretched poor.

We ask, as in years past and as we will ask long into the future, that you give to MAZON the dollars
that would have been spent for food on this blessed day of voluntary fasting, to help feed those
in our communities whose involuntary fast knows no end.

It is only with your help that we can help them.
