and have strengthened the
hospital's status in the pro-
fessional community. The
number of applications
Sinai receives from doctors
who want to affiliate with
the hospital has doubled
from past years, to about
60.
Success has bolstered
consumer confidence as
well, hospital officials say.
On average, the 603-bed
facility filled 409 beds each

373-bed daily census last
year.
of
anticipation
In
changes in the U.S. system
of health care, Sinai and
about 280 doctors have
formed a physician-hospi-
tal organization, an insti-
tution separate from the
hospital. The PHO aims to
offer Sinai's facilities and
doctors' services as one
package to managed care
companies, like preferred
provider organizations
(PPOs), health mainte-
nance organizations
(HMOs), as well as self-
insured employers.
Though many doctors
worry that PHOs — in con-
junction with the Clinton
administration's plan of
health-care reform — will
harm physicians and pa-
tient care, Mr. Schaengold
says it will enable Sinai to
avoid the dark ages it expe-
rienced a few years ago. ❑
