The Midrasha Center for
Adult Jewish Learning has
announced its schedule of Oc-
tober classes, programs and
special events. Except where
noted, all programs will be
held at the Agency for Jewish
Education building, 21550
West 12 Mile Road in
Southfield. There are tuition
fees for all Midrasha pro-
grams unless otherwise
stated.
Beginning Sept. 21,
in
scholar
Midrasha
Rod
Rabbi
residence,
Glogower, will lead a 12-week
seminar titled, "Inside the
Rabbinic Mind." This class
will work from original texts
(which Rabbi Glogower will
translate into English), in-
cluding materials from
Talmud, Midrash, medieval
codes, responsa, and other
classic rabbinic texts. Class
will meet Tuesday mornings
10:30 a.m.-noon in the
Midrasha library.
On Sept. 26, from 1-3 p.m.,
Professor Miriam Bodian of
the department of history at
the University of Michigan at
Ann Arbor will present a
slide lecture titled "Scattered
Pearls: The Sephardic
Diaspora." Professor Bodian's
program is being co-sponsored
and hosted by Temple
Emanu-El in Oak Park.
The Sept. 26 slide lecture
will provide an overview of a
four-part slide lecture mini-
course which Professor Bo-
dian will teach at Temple
Emanu-El Monday nights
beginning Oct. 4 titled, "Who
Is A Jew? A Case Study From
17th Century Jewish
History." Class sessions will
meet 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 4, 11, 18
and 25. This series will ex-
plore the experience of Por-
tuguese descendants of con-
versos who attempted to re-
enter Jewish life in Northern
European- several centuries
after their forebears had been
forced to convert to Chris-
tianity. Members of Temple
Emanu-El should contact
their congregation for special
tuition information about
Professor Bodian's classes.
"Eve and Beyond: Legends
of Jewish Women" will be the
subject of a three-part series
taught by Cantor Gail
Hirschenfang Oct. 4, 11 and
18 from 7-8 p.m., co-sponsored
and hosted by Temple Beth
El.
"The Jewish Heritage As
Expressed In Jewish Art"
will be explored in a four-part
daytime class taught by

Esther Tarnoff Cooper Oct.
11, 18, 25 and Nov. 1 from
12:30-2 p.m. This slide-lecture
course is co-sponsored and
hosted by the Janice Charach
Epstein Museum/Gallery at
the Maple-Drake JCC.
The Reverend James Lyons
of the Ecumenical Institute
for Jewish-Christian Studies
will teach a six-part class at
Midrasha beginning Oct. 11,
from 7:30-9 p.m. titled "Jesus
and the Judaism of His
Time."
"Confronting the Challeng-
ing Text: The World of
Medieval Torah Commen-
tary" will be the subject of a
three-part study series co-
sponsored and hosted by Tem-
ple Kol Ami in West Bloom-
field, Oct. 12, 19 and 26 from
7-8:30 p.m. This class will be
taught by Rabbi Rod
Glogower. Members of Temple
Kol Ami should contact the
contregation for special tui-
tion information about this
study series.

The fall schedule
contains a variety
of classes and
programs.

Yiddish language en-
thusiasts will have several op-
portunities to study Yiddish
with Rabbi Ahron Davidson
at fall classes co-sponsored
and hosted by Temple Shir
Shalom in West Bloomfield.
"Intermediate Yiddish" will
be offered on eight Wednes-
day nights beginning Oct. 13
from 7-8:15 p.m. "Advanced
Beginners Yiddish" will be
taught on eight Thursday
nights starting Oct. 14 from
7:30-9p.m.
Rabbi Davidson also will of-
fer an eight-part class titled
"The Art of Hebrew
Calligraphy," which will be
co-sponsored and hosted by
Shir Shalom on Wednesday
nights form 8:15-9:5 p.m.
Midrasha requires advance
registration and pre-payment
of tuition fees for all of its
classes and programs.
Scholarship assistance is
available. All Midrasha
classes are contingent on suf-
ficient enrollment, and
Midrasha reserves the right
to cancel any class in the
event minimum registration
requirements are not met. For
