A project which drew nearly 325 individuals each time, the Singles Shabbat Program rotated between eight synagogues with ser- vices, speakers and an Oneg Shabbat. This year, the scope has been expanded. Twelve services, one each month, will be available. The second night of Rosh Hashanah will kick off the series at 8:30 p.m. at Temple Shir Shalom. Temple Kol Ami hosted a singles Rosh Hashanah ser- vice last year in addition to sponsoring a Shabbat. It is again slated to sponsor a singles Shabbat. The committee decided to include a High Holiday ser- vice in this year's rotation. A renewed grant by the Max M. Fisher Foundation enables community mem- bers to attend all services at no charge. However, reser- vations for the High Holiday service are re- quired. "I think this is long over- due," said Dannel Schwartz of Temple Shir Shalom. "Where do singles meet? If the answer is the bar, Franklin Racquet Club or the Beverly Hills Grill, why not in a Jewish atmos- phere? "We're a coupled commu- nity. But here, Reform and Conservative singles can meet. Most temples and synagogues have limited funds and could not absorb all the costs of a separate service, speaker and oneg." Rabbi Schwartz said the Rosh Hashanah service will not be abbreviated, but instead geared toward its different audience in ser- mon content and emphasis on a social oneg. Although the program is not aimed at replacing a traditional worship service, it may be the only formal High Holiday prayers for some single, unaffiliated Jews. During the rotating sin- gles services last year, many who attended were temple or synagogue mem- bers, but even more were not, said Dr. Nancy Gad- Harf, program coordinator of the singles Shabbat ser- vice program. "I think there is a belief that the cost of joining a congregation is too high or that temples and syna- gogues are only family ori- ented. There is sometimes a sense of discomfort at Shabbat and holiday ser- vices," Dr. Gad-Harf said. "We're sending a message to the community that we are not excluding anyone." Following Rosh Hash- anah, the next singles Shabbat service will be at Congregation Beth Achim on Oct. 29. The speaker will be Howard Simon, Michi- gan's executive director of the ACLU. A final schedule through June will be announced.
