Purchases of durable goods increased 3 percent during the first half, as fur- niture purchases shot up 13 percent per capita. By con- trast, car purchases dropped 1 percent to 2 percent, while household goods purchases remained flat. Investment in fixed assets - such as land, buildings and equipment - fell 5 percent fol- lowing a flat second half last year. Investment in residential housing fell 19 percent in the first half, following a 12 per- cent drop in the previous half. The sharp decreases reflect drastic cuts in public housing, which was reduced 55 percent in the first half after a 23 percent drop in the second half last year. By contrast, private con- struction took up some of the slack and increased 10 per- cent in the first half. Investment in machines, equipment, non-residential buildings and infrastructure rose 3 percent, building on the 8 percent growth during the second half of last year. However, investment in non- residential buildings fell 10 percent. Goods and services exports grew 6 percent during the first half, following a 4 per- cent increase in the previous half. The increase in the first half reflected an 11 percent jump in industrial exports. In addition, income from tourism rose 8 percent, while diamond exports fell 3 per- cent and agricultural exports dropped 2 percent.
