Ilan Steinik is adding
a new twist to his
father Richard's 20-
year-old bagel busi-
ness.
He's delivering.
For the past six months,
Mr. Steinik, 26, has been
delivering bagels, as well as
cream cheese, orange juice
and fish, to his metro Detroit
area customers.
Now, aside from managing
his father's 10 Mile and
Coolidge store, Mr. Steinik is
running Detroit Bagel
Express, his bagel delivery
business, which is affiliated
with Detroit Bagel Co.
Because this is the '90s
and convenience is a way to
attract customers, Mr.
Steinik's business is a
response to customer
requests for bagel delivery.
"We're just trying to make
everyone happy," he said.
Robert Silver, co-owner of
Silvin Limited beauty shop
in West Bloomfield, has been
getting bagels delivered daily
to his shop for the past six
months and says he enjoys
the convenience.
"I happen to like the ser-
vice," he said. "It saves us a
lot of time every morning. It's
nice not to have to stand in
line and wait for bagels."
Detroit Bagel Express
is delivering to about 40
different businesses, mainly
in the Southfield, Farming-
ton Hills and West Bloom-
field areas, at a cost of about
$4 a dozen.
Only a handful of private
homes are getting bagels
delivered, but Mr. Steinik
expects those numbers to
grow.
"We are trying to increase
home sales," he said. "Right
now, people want to get out
as much as they can because
the weather is so nice, but in
the winter we expect that to
change." ❑
