or Women Helping Women,
with Ms. Parker, co-owner of
the Renoir Woman, another
downtown clothing store.
The 10 women who first
met for breakfast in January
quickly grew into a core of
business owners represent-
ing 28 different stores. To
date, Women Helping
Women has sponsored three
"Royal Shopping Sprees"
which raised more than
$2,500 for the Haven, a
Pontiac domestic violence
shelter and assistance orga-
nization. Future plans
include the possibility of
group advertising and coordi-
nated business hours.
"I'm excited that we're a
community of women-owned
businesses," Ms. Parker says.
"I think it's high time women
did the kind of networking
men have always done."
Networking appears to be
paying off for the city.
"Successful businesses
draw other businesses," Mr.
Marx explains. "Risk-takers
draw other risk-takers." ❑

Roberts says she finally
reached equilibrium with the
wholesale business. It gross-
es about $200,000 annually,
a sufficient base to support
her dream of a retail outlet,
which she opened last
October.
"This store is really an
extension of who I am." she
says.
Ms. Portnoy believes that
businesswomen like Ms.
Roberts are likely to succeed
in the area. While competi-
tion is not non-existent in
Royal Oak, downtown stores
are unique enough that their
owners can support one
another without jeopardizing
their own success, she says.
"It's new to me to have
women neighbors," she adds.
"Women are willing to coop-
erate. The customer feels
that and likes it."
Her desire to work with
other women in the commu-
nity led Ms. Portnoy to found

working in their profes-
sions compared to mem-

bers of previous immi-
grations, as the economy has
failed to absorb the highly-
skilled newcomers, according
to a Bank of Israel study
issued this week.
The study, written by
senior Bank of Israel econo-

mists Karnit Flug and Nitsa
Kasir, focuses on immi-
grants' short-term absorption
into the workforce.
Although in every immi-
gration wave there is a sig-

nificant number of immi-
grants that must change pro-

fessions, this phenomenon
has been particularly pro-
nounced in the present wave,
the study shows.
While 65 percent of those

who immigrated between
1979 and 1981 with scientific
or academic backgrounds
found jobs in their fields,
only a third did from those
who immigrated in the first
half of 1990. Among those
who came at the end of 1990,
only a fifth found jobs in
their fields after a year.
