ANTASTIC OUR DAY • E S Bloomfield. Today, Ms. Berman oper- ates three stores, the newest one in Detroit at the Millender Center. She is divorced from Mr. Klein, but she and her new husband, Sy Berman, manage the Detroit shop. Though Millender Center Continental Exclusives, which opened in April, has yet to generate a profit, Ms. Berman expects to do fine. "I think Detroit needed a store like this," she says. "Why go to more suburbs?" Edith and Sy Berman are glad to contribute something to Detroit's lagging retail market. She doesn't listen to dismal forecasters who say retail businesses can not sur- vive in the city. Ms. Berman always loved a good challenge. "It's proba- bly why I'm a survivor. Someone said I can't. I said I could." Edith and Sy Berman contribute something to Detroit's lagging retail market. She doesn't listen to forecasters who say retail businesses can not survive in the city. The store is filled with one-of-a-kind gifts in all price ranges, from $10 to thou- sands of dollars. There are black figurines and brand- name crystal pieces. Dolls and photo frames from all over the world line the shelves. In the corridor surround- ing the Millender Center store, passersby can hear the sounds of music boxes. Some play songs from Phantom of the Opera; others play car- rousel tunes. Ms. Berman offers Tiffany lamps, Austrian china, hand- painted porcelain"Delfts" from Holland and Oriental vases. Since the store is located next to the City- County Building, Ms. Berman purchased some bronze statues depicting a hall of justice. If that's not enough of a variety, patrons may want to see the Egyptian paintings with certificates of authentic- ity or the $1,300 chess sets or several antiques. "There's something for everybody," Ms. Berman says. 0 Take (Ill Additional 20% - 25% Off P TirCS Most Dinnerware, 01? Crystal ,clent- zair, kerwa re, and Select Gr. freare.
