Russian Jewels
On Display

DINA SHILOH

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

A

spectacular exhibi-
tion of priceless Rus-
sian jewels, 80 percent
of which have not even
been seen by the public of the
former Soviet Union, is now
on display at the Harry Op-
penheimer Diamond Museum
in Ramat Gan.
Months of negotiations
with the Rosscomdragmet,
the Committee of the Russian
Federation of Precious Metals
and Precious Stones, were
necessary to obtain the
"Treasures of Russia" collec-
tion, with final authorization
coming from Boris Yeltsin
himself. But the effort seems
to have paid off. Underneath
all the media hype surroun-
ding the exhibition, the show
is truly extraordinary and
people are flocking to see it.
At the door of the museum,
which is housed in the coun-
try's huge diamond exchange,
helpful guides are assigned to
guide visitors through the
display. The exhibit has been
divided into four sections the
first of which shows the raw
materials which the fabulous
wealth of Russia provides. A
12 kilo gold bar drew some in-
credulous gasps from the
visitors, and a 2,230 carat
Alexandrite stone, the second
largest in the world, also
created a stir.
The second section contains
18th and 19th century jewels
once belonging to the Russian
nobility. Some date from 1719
when Peter I began assembl-
ing various royal articles in
the Diamond Room of the
Winter Palace in St.
Petersburg, where they were
carefully preserved and
protected.
After the revolution in
1917, the treasures were
transferred to the Kremlin for
storage, and "Gokhran" (the
State Depository of Russia)
was established to look after
them. Only a privileged few
will have seen the infant
Prince Alexander Pavlov itch's
fist-sized gold baby rattle en-
crusted with diamonds, tur-
quoise, emeralds and rubies
and sporting an ivory handle.
From the Diamond Room of
the Tsar's Palace come the
beautiful diadem and earr-
ings of the Empress
Elizabeth. So too does a
thumb-sized pin with blue
and pink diamonds, original-
ly the possession of the Em-
press Maria Fedorovna.
